The Benefits Of Boxed Wine

Wine, wonderful wine, we love it in all its vessels; from bottle to can, but we’re particularly enamoured with Bag-In-Box. Those that know, know … You can now get great juice in a bag in box (BIB). But if you’re still a little unsure, we’ll enlighten you on the many advantages that come with drinking wine from a box.

Why choose a box of wine?

To start with, you may be wondering what’s so special about boxed wine - and the main benefit is simple: it lasts longer. The traditional bottle is a popular vessel for a reason, but bottled wine does go off more quickly once opened, leaving you with a choice: either find some pals to share the bottle with, or drink the whole thing yourself - potentially a much-regretted decision the following morning! With BIB wine, the wine is stored in an air-tight pouch inside the box and a small tap or spout on the side of the box is used to control the flow of wine.

Bag in box wine has the potential to last for up to six weeks once opened and will taste just as good as the day it was opened. This means that you can savour the wine at your leisure, and enjoy a glass or two whenever you feel like it - so it’s perfect to have in the fridge for a midweek glass.

How many bottles of wine in a box?

The amount of wine in a boxed wine can vary, but it usually comes out around the three bottle mark, which often makes it kinder to your wallet. Given that a standard bottle contains three to four glasses, a bag-in-box can therefore contain the equivalent of up to 15 glasses - that’s a lot of sipping to celebrate!

The quality of boxed wine

It may be true that boxed wine has been a bit of a joke in the past, but the quality of Bag-In-Box wine has improved significantly in recent years and its popularity has soared - with the sales numbers to prove it (for many it was the drink of choice during lockdown). Producers are now willing to put good wines into boxes - and especially a wine sourced by a certified Master of Wine, as our Portuguese Alvarinho is. So, if your main priority is the taste and quality of your wine, there really is no need to worry. You’re in safe hands with with a box - especially one that recently picked up Gold at The People’s Choice Wine Awards (wink wink).

Boxed wine and the environment

Aside from its staying power, there are always other reasons to go for a bag in box wine rather than a bottle. For one thing, boxes are better for the environment than their glass counterparts. Typically made from recycled materials, cardboard boxes take less energy to produce and transport, which reduces their CO2 footprint. Luckily, the outer cardboard and inner pouch in our Portuguese Alvarinho boxed wine are 100% recyclable, so if you’re after a planet-friendly potation, this is a no-brainer.

And we also think they make a pretty good canvas; which is why we got the amazing illustrator Egle Zvirblyte to design ours.

So, the next time you’re thirsty for a drop but don’t want to use an entire bottle, consider the simple yet delicious boxed wine. Sometimes it pays to drink inside the box…
